Foreign Minister Gives Lecture on Iraqi Foreign Policy in Stockholm

Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, gave a lecture on Iraq's foreign policy in the Swedish Institute for Diplomatic Studies in Stockholm on Friday May 30th, 2008 and reviewed Iraq's foreign policy orientations under the government's program, and stressed that Iraq's new foreign policy is a reality of a unified federal democratic Iraq.

Mr Zebari stated that Iraq is keen on achieving its primary objectives concerned with sovereignty, progress, prosperity, and achieving economic advancement and social development. Mr Zebari stated Iraq's desire to establish good neighborly relations and cooperation with neighboring countries and Arab Countries to achieve stability in the whole region and achieve the aspirations of their peoples.

Mr zebari spoke about the rebuilding of Iraqi diplomatic institutions over the past five years and stressed that the number of Iraqi missions operating in various countries reached its highest level with 86 missions and the Iraqi diplomacy obtains credibility in international and regional forums since it receives its directions from the Iraqi Constitution and adopted openness, transparency, responsibility and commitment to the norms of international law and renounces violence policy, aggression and interference in the internal affairs of others.

Mr Zebari touched in his speech on Iraq's relations with neighboring countries and brotherly Arab countries, the expanded neighboring countries meetings and the ongoing negotiations between the Iraqi government and U.S. to reach a framework strategy agreement.

The lecture was attended by many politicians, diplomats, academics and members of the Swedish diplomatic corps. Discussions took place during the questions and answers raised at the lecture.
