Iraqi-French Talks

The Iraqi-French official talks chaired by Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari and Mr. Bernard Kouchner, French Foreign Minister began at the ministry headquarters in Baghdad on Sunday June 1st 2008. During the discussions various aspects of bilateral relations and issues of common interests were discussed.

Minister Zebari expressed his appreciation to Mr. Kouchner for his second official visit to Baghdad, stating that Iraq highly depends on the French support both in reconstruction and building a new Iraq and in international forums.

Minister Zebari pointed to the improvement in the security and overall development of the situation in Iraq stressing that the government seeks to implement more plans of programs and projects and that France is invited to contribute to implement these projects and contribute to invest in the institutions of the new Iraq.

On his part, Mr. Bernard Kouchner, French Foreign Minister, expressed his pleasure for his second visit to Iraq, pointing out that he witnessed tangible and visible development of progress that reflects the determination and insistence to move forward in building the new Iraq.

Mr. Kouchner also added that France will stand with Iraq bilaterally to support it in the United Nations and international community and that the relations between Baghdad and Paris are advancing.

Mr. Kouchner stressed that his visit to Nasiyriah and meeting Iraq's leaderships gave him a brilliant image about the political development in Iraq, stating that he will travel to Erbil this afternoon June 1st 2008, to open an office for the French embassy and stressed that the French foreign Ministry will open another French office in south of Iraq.

Mr. Bernard Kouchner arrived to Baghdad from Nasiriyah on 31st of May 2008, and was received by Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari.

During his visit, Mr. Kouchner also met His Excellency President of Iraq, His Excellency Prime Minister and Head of the Representative Council and Vice President.
